The Arecanut plant is cultivated in a polyhouse environment, ensuring optimal growth conditions. The polyhouse is well-ventilated and the plant is nourished with bio-enhancers to promote robust health. The plant receives consistent irrigation, ensuring it remains well-hydrated. These practices are maintained for one year to guarantee a high-quality product.

When to plant

In high rainfall areas, plant at the end of the monsoon, especially in plots with clayey soils and high water tables.

Site and layout

Arecanut trees grow well in humid areas that are protected from heavy winds and hot sun.

Soil

Plant in well-drained soil or sand. For better growth and development, proper drainage is essential. In well-drained soils, deep planting is preferred.

Raising seedlings

Arecanut trees are propagated by seeds. Select fully ripe nuts that weigh more than 35 grams from a mother palm that is at least ten years old and has a good fruit set. Sow the seed nuts 5 centimeters apart in sand beds that are 1.5 meters wide and of a suitable length, with the stalk ends pointing upwards. Water the beds daily to encourage germination. After about six months, transplant the seedlings to secondary nursery beds with suitable soil conditions and optimal spacing.

Care

In the initial stages, up to 4–5 years, you can plant bananas between rows to provide shade for the arecanut trees. You can also try soil bunding, anchoring young seedlings, mulching, and shading.
